Do I Need to File a Tax Return?

Not everyone needs to file a tax return but remember that filing a return is the only way to get money back.

Generally, three things determine whether you must file a tax return:

  • Your filing status, whether you are single, married or filing jointly.
  • Your age, whether you are under 65 or 65 and older.
  • Your gross income for 2009.

Under 65 $9,350
65 or older $10,750

Married Filing Jointly

Both spouses under 65 $18,700
One spouse 65 or older $19,850
Both Spouses 65 or older $20,900

If your status is Married filing separately you Must file if your gross income is at least $3,650

Head of Household

Under 65 $12,000
65 or older $13,400

Qualifying Widow(er)

Even if you do not need to file, you should file a federal income tax return to get any money back that you might be owed.
