Definition of Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS):

Depreciation system that allows for larger deductions earlier on, which in turn promotes investment. The main differences between the MACRS and the ACRS (which it replaced in 1986) is that the MACRS has more asset classes and uses longer recovery periods.
